When you're digging up razor clams, you need a place to keep your catch. You don't want to leave your treasures just lying in a pile on the sand. You need the hands-free Danielson clam net.

It's designed to hang on your belt, right on your side: that's important for several reasons.

First, of course, is the fact that the Danielson clam net is super-convenient: you'll be able to dig up a razor clam, wipe off most of the sand, and just drop it right into the net hanging on your side. As you walk along the beach, looking for that next circular “clam show” dimple, the most of the sand on the clamshells will just fall off naturally.

The second is that you'll be fully compliant with the clam regulations. Clam-harvesting experts know that the fish and game warden wants to be able to see what you've harvested at a single glance. He or she is going to be walking up and down the beach, making sure everyone is sticking to the legal limit. You don't want to get any unwanted attention, even though you may be following all the rules. It's a hassle. (Buckets and opaque baskets are an absolute no-go: don’t take one when you go clamming, it will ruin your day.)

Finally, once you've caught your limit of clams for the day, you can simply dip your clam net into the water and wash off any remaining sand. All that’s left to do is head to the nearest stove or campfire to enjoy your catch!

The Danielson clam net is constructed from nylon mesh and a vinyl-coated steel ring.

Overall size: 21” deep, with a 9-1/4” ring.

The belt loop is 4" X 1-1/4", black nylon.

So you've decided to go razor clam digging... good for you! You definitely need the right gear before you go.

The basic setup for a day of razor clamming includes:
 1) the correct license
 2) a clam shovel or clam gun
 3) a clam net bag to hold your catch

The Danielson clam shovel is one option of that necessary gear (the other option is a clam gun).

So how do you use it?

Once you've spotted a razor clam "show" (a donut, spot, or dimple) you need to follow these steps to pry out your molluscs. First: put the shovel's blade tip about 5 inches from your chosen spot with the BACK of the shovel facing the ocean -- so the handle will be facing away from the waves, probably toward the sand dunes. Next, put your back into it! Push the clam shovel blade straight down and drop down to one knee. Then, gently rock the clam shovel back and forth to make it easy to push down further. Be careful! You need to keep the shovel vertical (straight up-and-down) to make sure you don't break the razor clam shell. Finally, lift several scoops of sand out of the hole in a sliding fashion. It's a sort of lifting/rocking motion -- don't worry, you'll get a feel for it. Once you can fit your hand down the hole, quickly reach for your prize!

The Danielson clam shovel blade is strong steel and the 41" handle is solid ash wood, so you know it will hold up to sand and the occasional rock. The 9" long blade tapers from a 5" back to a 4" tip, and is securely fastened to the handle with rivets.

It's razor clam season! When the weather starts getting colder, it's time to head to the coast!

The Pacific razor clam is one of the most popular types of shellfish harvested in Washington state. They're super meaty with a narrow, slightly curved shell -- much like the handle or blade of an old-style straight razor. (The edge of the clamshell can be "razor-sharp" too, so watch your fingers when you're digging!)

The folks that live in the Pacific Northwest are lucky to have one of the best razor clam locations in the world. Digging for these delicious clams is a fun activity suitable for all members of your family, from kids to grandparents. Depending on where you go, you might see as many as a thousand other razor clam seekers sharing the beach. But don't worry: there are plenty of razor clams for everyone.

So how do you prepare to go razor clam digging?

You definitely need the right gear before you go.
The basic setup for a day of razor clamming includes:
 1) The correct license
 2) A clam shovel or clam gun
 3) A clam net bag to hold your catch

First, make sure you have the proper Washington state license. You will need a razor clam license to harvest clams legally (or one of the shellfish/seaweed combo licenses, there are several different kinds). You can order one online, by phone, or at an authorized license dealer. Once you have it, you'll need to keep that license in your possession while you're digging and after you've caught your limit (in case a ranger needs to inspect it).

Next, you'll need a tool to actually dig down and pull those elusive clams out of the sand. The Danielson clam gun is one option of that necessary gear (the other option is a clam shovel).

This clam gun has been engineered specifically for removing razor clams from sandy ocean beaches. Its solid all-steel construction makes it strong enough to burrow into any shore in pursuit of shellfish.

Measuring 31" in length, it features a 5" x 15" barrel with a 1-3/16" x 10" T-handle.

Now, like the old-time clam expert says: "Ya can't dig ya clams at high tide." After you've found your spot at LOW tide, go searching along the shore for dimples in the sand.

So how do you use a clam gun?

Set your clam gun barrel off-center with more sand on the side facing the water. Push down while twisting back and forth, rocking in a circular manner. Once the barrel is as deep as you can go, block the air vent on the underside of the handle with your finger, then pull straight up. When you remove your finger from the vent hole, a core of sand will drop out onto the beach -- and this is where your razor clam will be, if you've got the clammer's luck.

If you want to know more about clam gun usage, try watching a video or two before you go.

CLAM GUN ANODIZED ALUM

Measuring 31" in length, it features a 5" x 15" barrel with a 1-3/16" x 10" T-handle with a polycarbonate lining to pad your hands a little bit. (Some people consider the aluminum Danielson razor clam gun to be the Cadillac of clam guns.)
